Jon Faurot's musical
background runs the gamut. He is deeply immersed in the blues, country
music, rockabilly, rock and roll and a wide variety of pop. The music
on the album "Spirit To Spirit" is an eclectic group of songs, each
one providing a snapshot of his passion and versatility.
The first four songs
are the heart of the album, starting off with a great American rock and
roll song, "She's My Little Girl". The driving piano of L.A. session player
Jim Ehinger and the searing guitar playing of Andy Milukoff provide an
energetic foundation for the opening song's vocals and lyrics. The next
song, "Faraway", co-written with ex-Byrds singer/ songwriter Gene Clark
has a haunting melody and harrowing lyrics. The third song is called "Heart
And Soul", a polished three minute pop song with soaring melodies, and
the fourth, "Diamonds In The Sun", has a French folk song feel with accordian
and mandolin played by David Jackson and Bob Robles respectively.
"Love Is The Only
Thing" contains a positive message carried along with an upbeat melody,
relief in the midst of today's typically dark lyrics. Next is Bob Dylan's
"Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", the only cover on the album. Sung
with conviction, it has two brilliant solos in the middle of the song,
Gabe Bwitcher on fiddle and Bob Robles once again on pedal steel.
When asked why he
chose this song for a cover, Jon said, "I wasn't going to record a cover
at all but I cut it one day for fun and it came out so well that we decided
to finish it. It's a great song that I've sung many times as well as a
tip of the hat to one of the world's great songwriters." The next two
songs are more experimental. "Take Me For A Ride", co-written with Garth
Beckington, was produced in a European cabaret fashion. "So Long" was originally
an acoustic guitar ballad and ended up with a heavy, swirling beat and
lyrics evocative of a sorrowful journey. Both of these songs bear the
production mark of Eric Garcia in a more definitive way than the others.
"October Rain"
is a love song with reverie-like lyrics, a poetic melody and simple but
full production. The last song on the record, "You Can't Live Without
Love", also co-written with Garth Beckington, takes the record in yet
another direction with its funky groove, powerful singing by Carla Drew
and sax by Paul Weber.
The album also hosts
a number of other great players including Ziv Fisher, Gary Ferguson, Pete
Straub, Leon Rubenhold, Mike Tovar, David Jackson, Paul Eckman, Adam Lieb
and additional vocals by Jensen Bell. The album could not have been made
without the extraordinary talent, tenacity, and friendship of producer
Eric Garcia.
